Coach Directions
2009 Missouri Envirothon
Congratulations! You've been working hard and we appreciate your efforts. The agenda for the state competition, directions to the site, and hotel information for those who may need to stay overnight are all available on the website at least 1 week prior to the state competition.. Also the parental consent form and photo release form that must be signed by the parent of each student and turned in at registration in order for your team to compete are available on the website as well. Only the five (5) team members may attend the competition, no alternates. Coaches must sign a photo release form, too.
Please have your team at the registration area no later than 8:00 a.m. Oral presentation materials must be turned in at registration including note cards. During registration, students will receive their competition schedule, a team number and a Missouri Envirothon T-shirt. Students must wear their Envirothon T-shirts during the entire competition to ensure anonymity. The oral component will be held at an indoor station. Students will compete at three stations in the morning and three stations in the afternoon.
Coaches will attend a special activity while the students are testing in the morning. In the afternoon, coaches can visit the ecosystem test stations, however, no communication with the students will be allowed during this time. Any coach who talks while the students are present is subject to disqualification of his or her team.
Students and coaches should bring a backpack or tote to carry clothes and other miscellaneous items. Please advise students to bring a poncho (in case of rain), sunscreen, hats, insect repellent and sunglasses. They will find it advantageous to dress in layers because of the time of year. If you have any students with special needs, please inform the committee ahead of time so appropriate measures can be taken.
As coach you will need to be aware of any medical concerns (such as allergies to bee stings) and bring a copy of each student's school medical form (including health insurance information) to the competition. You will retain these forms -- to be used only in case of emergency.
All 5 team members of the first place team will compete in the Canon Envirothon competition (no substitutions). The 2009 Canon Envirothon will be hosted at University of North Carolina in Asheville, NC, August 2-8, 2009. The entry fee, which includes room and board for five team members and two coaches, has already been paid. A travel stipend provided by the Missouri Envirothon Committee should help with any travel arrangements necessary for the team and coaches to attend this competition. Over fifty teams are expected to compete at the Canon Envirothon for prizes ranging from scholarships to Canon camera products. If the winning state team cannot compete, the second place team will represent Missouri at the Canon Envirothon and will receive the travel stipend.
The state winning team is also expected to make an appearance at a state conference the last week of November at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri, for a presentation. They may also be asked to participate in our state Soil and Water Commission meeting to give their oral presentation to the Commissioners.
